Arthur the Dog

There is a sport called adventure racing in which teams of athletes take part in a race that lasts anything from three to eight days. During this time the teams will run, cycle, climb and kayak over hundreds of miles in some of the least hospitable areas of the planet, all against the clock.

In one well-documented story, a Swedish team racing in Ecuador as part of the World Championships picked up a new team-mate in the form of a stray and wounded dog they named Arthur. Arthur followed the team for days as they climbed up cliffs, trekked through the jungle and scrambled down ravines. He even swam beside their kayaks as they raced towards the finish. Never giving up despite his growing injuries, he actually crossed the finish line with the team some 100 miles later.

One member of the team, Mikael Lindnord, was so moved by the incredible bravery, endurance and tenacity of Arthur that he went through the nightmare of Ecuadorian bureaucracy to get him quarantined and flown back to Stockholm with him.1 Their story has even been turned into a book – Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home.

But how does all this relate to my golden shadow? When I first read about Arthur in the news, I was moved to tears. There was something about the loyalty, strength, love and, more than anything else, courage of that wounded stray dog that stuck with me. And it seems that it also stuck ‘in’ me too, as my dreaming mind chose Arthur to represent those qualities of my golden shadow.
